What Should I Know About Termites?
THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST TERMITES IS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE. THE OTHER OPTION IS WAITING UNTIL YOU SEE SIGNS OF TERMITE DAMAGE.

Eastern subterranean termites are small, ant-like insects. However, they differ from ants in that they feed off the cellulose in wood. Working largely unseen under the surface, termites can tunnel through the wooden structural members in buildings and completely destroy them. Wood that comes in contact with the soil, such as the exterior trim or cladding on your home, provides a perfect point of entry for a termite colony.

Termites are social insects that live in colonies where labor is divided among a caste system; they have reproductive and soldier castes. In many termite societies there is also a distinct worker caste, but the typical duties of termite workers (nest building, food gathering, and feeding the reproductives and soldiers) are handled by nymphs as well.

Termite Workers and nymphs do all the work, soldiers sole job is to defend the colony.

Winged adult termites are often called swarmers, who are primary reproductives. They emerge from the colonies on colonizing flights during certain seasons in the year. After the flights, the male termite(king) and female termite(queen) will pair up, lose their wings and construct a small cell in the soil. They will mate, lay eggs, and rear the first group of workers. In colonies where the primary reproductives are not present, secondary reproductive termites (without color or functional wings) often occur in large numbers.

How Do I Know If I'm Infested?

Sometimes you see insects in your home that you think may be termites. Often what you see are winged ants, which are very similar. Here is two simple ways to distinguish between to two.

  Winged Ant -

  Narrow waist

  Elbowed antennae

 Wings of unequal length

 Swarmer Termite -

  Straight waist

  Straight antennae

  Wings of equal length

The "swarmer" or flying termite is probably what you would see in your home. The "workers" who consume the wood and "soldiers" who protect the termite colony are usually out of sight.

A Termite Inspection by a PROCON specialist will determine whether your home really has termites. You may have already spotted some of the most obvious signs.

Termite Wings -
Swarmer termites often fly up against your windows and lose their wings, which you might find on your windowsills.

Shelter Tubes -
Termites create mud tubes to protect themselves from dry air as they travel from their underground colony into your house.

Wood Damage -
Usually on the hidden side of wood beams, since termites eat wood from the inside where it's moist.

What Can Termites Do To My Property?

Termites eat wood. In their natural habitat, termites eat stumps and logs off the forest floor. But on your property, they can eat away the equity you have built up in your home and property. The fact is termites infest more than 600,000 homes each and every year, causing more damage than fires, storms or earthquakes - an estimated $5 billion in the United States alone. How can you make sure your properity doesn't become a termite statistic? By being proactive and establishing an ongoing maintenance program with a professional pest management provider like TermiGuard Inc.

How Can A Professional Pest Control Firm Help?

Only a trained Termite and Pest Control professional understands the intricacies of how a termite colony behaves. Using advanced materials and methods, a skilled TermiGuard specialist can effectively protect your property investment.

How Can I Help Prevent Termite damage?

Almost every structure is a potential home for termites, since what they need most are wood and moisture. Even in homes made primarily of stone or brick, wood can be found in the structural supports or other things on the property that are in direct contact with the soil, such as fence posts, decks, and tree stumps.

Situations that maximize moisture near the foundation encourage termite colonization.

Fortunately, most of these can be corrected:

- Plumbing and roofing leaks.

- Cracks in the foundation.

- Broken or ineffective downspouts and gutters.

- Ground sloping toward the foundation.

- Insufficient ventilation.

- Rigid insulation.

- Decks, wooden steps, firewood, or landscaping timbers in contact with soil.
